Professional headshot of a business professional by Chris Watkins Photography in Gainesville Fl. Gainesville Headshot Photography.

In a digital world, your headshot is your handshake. Whether you are a corporate executive, a creative entrepreneur, or a UF grad entering the workforce, your image speaks before you do. Does your current photo say "average," or does it say you are ready to dominate your market?

At Chris Watkins Photography, I know that stepping in front of a camera can feel intimidating. Most people don't know what to wear, how to pose, or where to look.

That is exactly why I created this guide. My job is to handle the technical details so you can show up looking confident and approachable. Here is how to prepare for a headshot that sets you apart from the competition.

1. Wardrobe: Dress for the Job You Want

Your clothing should never compete for attention with your face. We want the viewer to connect with your eyes, not get distracted by your shirt.

  • Stick to Solids: Heavy patterns, tight grids, and loud stripes create visual "noise" on camera. Solid colors are timeless and professional.
  • Fit is King: Baggy clothes look sloppy; overly tight clothes look uncomfortable. Wear a tailored fit that makes you feel powerful.
  • Color Psychology:Darker colors (Navy, Charcoal, Black) convey authority and trust. Jewel tones (Emerald, Royal Blue) pop beautifully on almost all skin tones. Avoid: Neons that cast color onto the skin or flesh tones that wash you out.
  • The "10X" Tip: Bring layers. A sharp blazer can turn a casual t-shirt into a "creative executive" look in seconds. We can shoot both looks to give you more value from a single session.

2. Grooming: The "Polished You"

You don’t need to reinvent yourself for your headshot. You just need to be the best version of yourself.

  • Hair: Stick to your "go-to" style. If you need a cut or color, schedule it 3-5 days before the shoot so it has time to settle.
  • Glasses: If people recognize you with glasses, wear them! They are part of your personal brand. If you have a pair with anti-glare coating, bring those.
  • Makeup: Aim for "Natural Plus." You want to look like you—just slightly more refined. Avoid heavy glitters or shimmers, as studio lights can reflect off them unpredictably.

3. Location: Studio vs. Outdoors

We offer both styles in Gainesville, and the choice depends on the story you want to tell.

The Studio Look

  • The Vibe: Clean, controlled, and high-authority.
  • Best For: Lawyers, doctors, corporate executives, and actors.
  • Why Choose It: We have total control over the lighting and background. It is consistent, classic, and isolates you as the subject.

The On-Location (Outdoor) Look

  • The Vibe: Approachable, dynamic, and organic.
  • Best For: Personal branding, lifestyle entrepreneurs, and creatives.
  • Why Choose It: Shooting in an environment adds context to your photo. It feels less "stiff" and more relatable.

4. Final Prep: Mindset and Energy

The camera captures energy. If you are tired or dehydrated, it shows.

  • Hydrate: Drink plenty of water the day before. It sounds simple, but it makes your skin look vibrant.
  • Rest: Get a solid night's sleep.
  • Trust Your Photographer: This is the most important step. Don't worry about your "good side" or how to smile. I will coach you through every angle and expression.
